Valeš Somp S.R.O

Ladislav Valeš graduated in 1981 from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague, specializing in Civil Engineering. From 1991 to 1993, he pursued postgraduate studies at the Institute of Forensic Engineering at Brno University of Technology, focusing on defects and failures in buildings. Since 1993, he has served as a forensic expert in civil engineering. From 2000 to the present, he has been actively involved in technical analysis of the causes of ETICS failure.

TECHNICAL CAUSES OF CRACKS IN ETICS

The presentation discusses the correlation between the evolving trends in ETICS and the growing risk of failure of ETICS top layers. There is a trend towards increasingly thicker thermal insulation layers while simultaneously reducing the mechanical properties of insulations. As a result, higher deformations occur in the installed insulation layer, leading to higher stress levels in the relatively fragile ETICS top layers. This increase in stress raises the risk of failure due to cracking. Ensuring the integrity and water tightness of the ETICS surface layers is essential for maintaining the expected performance of the thermal insulation layer throughout its planned service life. Our current focus are identify and describe the risk factors associated with cracks in ETICS surface layers. We aim to inform the professional community how to reduce the occurrence of such issues. The second part of the presentation offers a more detailed technical analysis of the underlying causes of a specific instance of crack damage in ETICS from practical experience. In this case, the failure is not typically attributed to undersizing but to ETICS surface layers oversizing.
