Wroclaw University of Science and Technology

A graduate of the Faculty of Architecture at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, where he graduated with distinction. In 2013, he obtained his PhD at Warsaw University of Technology. He currently works as an assistant professor at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, specializing in sustainable design, energy and environmental optimization of buildings, life cycle analysis (LCA), as well as carbon footprint and carbon debt issues (CPP). He is the author of numerous scientific publications and a participant in national and international research projects related to climate neutrality and modern technologies in construction. In addition to his academic and research activities, he actively works as an architect, providing energy performance certificates and offering consulting services in sustainable design.

Carbon footprint payback time in thermal retrofitting – when does it pay off?”

This presentation will provide a comprehensive comparison of the Carbon Payback Period (CPP) indicator for different variants of external wall insulation. CPP defines the time required for energy savings to offset the CO₂ emissions generated during the production of insulation materials. Various insulation materials were analysed in relation to wall types, locations in Europe, and energy sources, taking their emissions into account. The research results show significant differences between EU countries, indicating which insulation systems have the shortest CPP and what the average value is for Europe. This review helps to better understand where Poland stands compared to other countries and what solutions may contribute to more effective decarbonization in construction.
